Remember not to Ignore Lighting

Lamps, light fixtures and windows are usually the last thing on people’s minds when they want to renovate, unless they work with an interior designer. Any professional designer will tell you that lighting can change the entire mood and functionality of a space. A dimly room will bring out warm colors, but can make a room seem small or uninviting. While bright lights may wash out some color, it will energize the space and make it more lively when you have company. Each room in the house should have an overhead light, preferably one that has adjustable settings to the brightness. Also take into consideration that overhead or bright LED lighting may be overwhelming early in the morning and late at night. You want to add dimmer lamps to all seating areas. Maximize natural window lighting, not only to add a less overwhelming glow to rooms, but to save on electricity bills. Look for energy saving or eco-friendly lights. These will save you money on your electric bill over time, and can add value to the home if you ever decide to sell. You can swap out traditional light bulbs for energy efficient ones, or use solar-powered lighting in areas of the house that are less frequently used. As you plan the electrical capacity of your home, look for ways to save. Overhead lights can be trendy and functional. You can use unconventional chandeliers over dining room tables to add a centerpiece that doesn’t have to be on the table.  Use bright lampshades or funky designs on desks to make your work space more fun. And try to use lamps that take up minimal space. While they can be fun, you don’t want to take up to much of your floor space with standing lamps. Lastly, remember to utilize lighting from windows as much as possible. If you’re in the market to buy a new home, look for houses that have large windows in most if not all rooms. You will, however, need window coverings to control the amount of natural light that filters through.
