How to Keep a Carpet Clean in the Spring

Now that spring has sprung, it’s time to get serious about your spring cleaning. And once it’s good as new, KEEP IT that way. Here are a few tips to make sure your carpet gets a deep clean and stays fresh, even in the most high-traffic rooms.

Vacuum First

Life is busy, but if you’re able, you should be vacuuming at least once a week, to keep dander, dirt, dust and other allergens to a minimum. At least once a year be sure to move all your furniture and get the hard to reach spots. This also includes along the baseboard. Your vacuum should have an attachment specifically for this.

Get rid of stains

There are tons of carpet cleaning products out there that’ll do the trick, and if you’ve found one that works for you, stick with it! However, there’s also a number of DIY tips and tricks for getting rid of pesky stains that need a few treatments. Here’s one we’ve found to work well in most cases:
  1. Mix a solution of 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water in a spray bottle.
  2. Spray the stain.
  3. Place a damp rag on the stain.
  4. Using an iron on the steam setting, iron the rag for about half a minute.
  5. If the stain is still there, repeat the process.
  6. Allow to air dry.

Use a steam cleaner

A steam cleaner will get all of the grime that the regular vacuum missed. Be sure to follow the instructions on the steam cleaner explicitly. Before you begin, be sure to plan a route that cleans every part of the carpet without you having to walk over clean areas. Start in the far corner and be sure to use clear, straight lines to make sure you don’t miss any spots. Then be sure to let the carpet completely dry before moving any furniture back or walking on it.

Keep your carpet fresh

It’s best to keep shoes off on your carpet, or at least to have a mat where guests can wipe their feet. Vacuum once or twice a week. And if you want to add a bit of bright scent and prolong freshness, you can use a carpet freshener. There are plenty available online or you can mix your own using 1 cup of baking soda,10-20 drops of your favorite essential oil, and if you have pets, add ½ cup of borax to keep fleas at bay.
