Don’t Gut EVERYTHING Until You Have a Plan.
You start with one task. “I’ll just tear out this one section of the wall, and then stop.” So you do, and because the one area looks so great you think, “Hmm, maybe I can make this room a little nicer too. It wasn’t that expensive.” Then you dig a little deeper into the budget, and since it looks like so much fun on T.V. you start to rip out floors and tearing down the wallpaper you always hated. Then walls, and more flooring, and before you know it you have very little house left! But you don’t have a plan. “How long will this remodel take?” You have no idea. What now?
It happens all the time – we get carried away, and put ourselves in a situation we didn’t prepare for. Try to avoid making decisions without a solid plan in place. Sometimes you don’t even need to remodel. There’s plenty of things you can do to give your home a new look without taking it apart.
Reduce clutter and furnishings. One of the most common reasons why people remodel is that they don’t have enough space. They completely renovate, tearing down walls and designing add-ons when all they really need to do is rearrange and remove things that are already there. Go for a minimal design, and look for ways to reduce your decorating.
Reuse materials from your last project to make something new. Rather than gutting a room and starting from scratch, try reusing materials you already have to create a fresh look. Maybe you have extra paint , or can redo some of the flooring with tiles you had from a previous renovation. Think outside the box, or find inspiration on Pinterest.
Reorganize your decor to give rooms a fresh look. Sometimes all you need to do to achieve a new look is move your decorations to different areas of the house. Have your family photos been on the same shelf for years? Move them to a new area of the house and see how much moore you notice and appreciate them. You can do the same with furniture, rugs, and other display items.
If you absolutely feel the need to take a hammer to the wall, plan out exactly how you’re going to rebuild it. Start with the room structure, then consider what needs to be replaced (counters, flooring, etc.). Make a sketch of your ideas, and consult with a designer before you begin.Make sure your plan is financially feasible, and that it will provide functionality as well as aesthetics.
