Be Sure to Do Your Homework

Before starting any home remodeling project, it’s important to know exactly what you’re getting into. It won’t take long before the work requirements start to grow and you feel like you’re in over your head. But you can avoid a great amount of stress by simply conducting some preliminary research. Even if you hire contractors, you’ll want to know exactly what they’re doing, how long it will take, how much it should cost, and what to do if things go wrong. Here’s a list of things homeowners usually don’t know, but should research, before they begin a home improvement or renovation project (DIY or not):
  • Allocate time wisely. Research your different renovation ideas, and get quotes from multiple contractors. You don’t want to waste time on a project that will take forever if it isn’t that important to you. Choose the project that take the least amount of time,, and that are most important to you.
  • Pick up a home improvement book oor guide. Chances are, you’ll want to do a lot of work on your home over the years, so it’s a good investment to learn as much as you can for all projects, whether they’re first or last on your to-do list. A general home improvement guide or beginner’s book will serve you well now and in the future.
  • Research home value add before you start a project. Many homeowners start a project thinking it will add market value to their home, when in reality it adds nothing or decreases the value. Trendy additions or risky renovations can cost you more than is necessary, so choose the renovations that are worth the most to you and your home.
  • DIY when you can, but don’t go overboard. It’s tempting to tackle a project by yourself if you see something really stylish on Pinterest. But be careful, just because something looks easy online doesn’t mean you should always do it yourself. Research the tools, preparation, and skills you need before trying any DIY project.
  • Interview several contractors. Doing your homework includes finding the right team to handle the projects you don’t feel comfortable doing by yourself. That includes flooring, plumbing, electrical, or major reconstruction work. Ask for price quotes from several contractors, and schedule a face-to-face interview so you can ask questions and build trust between you and the contractor you choose.
  • Develop a plan, and a timeline. Once you’ve received price quotes and time estimates, develop a solid plan so you stay on track. Ask for reports from your contractor to make sure everything’s running smoothly, and make changes to the plan if necessary.
