5 Steps to Prepping for New Flooring
When you are getting ready to install a new floor you want to make sure you don’t skip any steps, that includes doing your prepping the right way. Prepping can save you a lot of time during your project. It also helps save you time by making sure you slow down and do your install correctly. We know that prepping for painting is a pain in the butt, but it’s always worth it when you have a nice clean paint job and the same goes for flooring.
So first things first, you want to make sure you control your dust. Dust is a huge problem that people run into when installing floors, and prepping the right way can make all the difference. You can control the dust better by blocking off any the room you are installing in with clear tarps and taping the tarp to the wall so that dust doesn’t move to other rooms that aren’t being tampered with. After sanding you can also eliminate dust by wiping down the floor with a damp cloth and letting rest overnight.
Next, remove all non-necessary woodwork. This includes removing baseboards, especially because you want to re-install the boards to go over your flooring. You also will want to remove any doors. This will help you keep your dust control down and make it easier to install from room to room.
After this step you will want to prepare the sub-floor. This is an important step and you don’t want to skip it. Having a sturdy and solid sub-floor will make the installation of new flooring even easier and making the results last even longer.
Lastly, find a good space to work. Having a designated work space that you can use can make installation quicker and easier. If you have an area to work in that has a plug in outlet with enough room to cut your boards, then go for it. This will also help you stay patient throughout the whole project.
